Kisspeptin is a neuropeptide encoded by the KISS1 gene and is recognized as a central regulator of reproductive hormone signaling. It acts upstream of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), stimulating GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus and initiating downstream release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Researchers utilize Kisspeptin in laboratory studies exploring reproductive axis regulation, neuroendocrine signaling, and mechanisms underlying puberty, fertility, and sexual behavior.

Research suggests Kisspeptin is involved in several key biological processes related to reproductive and neuroendocrine regulation:

GnRH Neuron Activation

Kisspeptin binds to the GPR54 (KISS1R) receptor on GnRH neurons, triggering GnRH release and activating the reproductive hormone cascade.

HPG Axis Regulation

Through its upstream control of GnRH, Kisspeptin governs pituitary secretion of LH and FSH, making it a primary regulator of the hypothalamic–pituitary–gonadal axis.

Puberty & Reproductive Maturation

Loss-of-function models demonstrate that Kisspeptin signaling is essential for pubertal onset and normal reproductive development.

Hormonal Pulsatility

Kisspeptin participates in both pulsatile and surge-like GnRH release patterns, supporting research into endocrine timing and fertility signaling.

Neurobehavioral Signaling

Human and animal studies have examined Kisspeptin’s influence on limbic brain regions, linking reproductive hormones with emotional and sexual behavior processing.
